Rong (Rocky) Ye

Postdoctoral researcher, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Michigan

Hi, I'm Rong (Rocky) Ye. I am trained as a physical chemist with a strong track record in heterogeneous catalysis (with a background in homogeneous catalysis).

I received my B.E. from the Department of Polymeric Material and Engineering at Sun Yat-Sen University (Guangzhou, China). Then I came to the U.S. for graduate research. I received my Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, gaining core expertise in the synthesis, characterization, and mechanistic studies of nano-catalysts under the advisement of Profs. Gabor A Somorjai and F. Dean Toste. I joined the lab of Prof. Peng Chen at Cornell University as a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow and used single-molecule imaging and statistical methods to study surface chemistry and catalysis.

Now I am co-advised by (in alphabetical order) Profs. Bryan Goldsmith, Suljo Linic, Eranda Nikolla, and Nirala Singh to work on applying machine learning to heterogeneous catalysis research.

Main research areas

Development of hybrid catalysts for improved performance

Superresolution imaging for single-entity catalytic behavior

Optimization of catalysts and discovery of principles with AI
